Understanding Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI)

On Behalf of | Feb 5, 2026 | Social Security Disability

If you are a working adult who recently became disabled or diagnosed with a serious health condition, your situation may make you eligible for SSDI. This form of financial support from the government can help provide ease in your life as you stay at home to recover from your disability.

What is SSDI?

SSDI is a type of federal program that provides eligible individuals with monthly disability payments. If you have a certain amount of employment credits and a disability that makes you incapable of working for at least a year, you may apply for the program.

Alternatively, if you have a terminal disease that is expected to result in death, your SSDI application may be expedited.

If your disability enables you to perform a substantial gainful activity (SGA), you must have a monthly earning limit of $1,690 (if you are not blind) or $2,830 (if you are blind). If you earn higher than the given SGA limits, you cannot qualify for SSDI.

How does the Social Security Administration (SSA) determine a qualifying disability?

After you apply for SSDI, the SSA will review your application to see if you meet the basic requirements. Aside from this, they will also verify if you have worked enough years to become eligible for SSDI.

If you pass the initial screening, they will send your case to the Disability Determination Service (DDS) in your state. The DDS will then proceed by connecting with your medical providers to ensure that they consider all aspects of your case.

While your doctors’ inputs about your medical condition are valuable, they do not decide if you meet the agency’s definition of disability or not.

You deserve support for your disability

Living day-to-day with a disability that makes you incapable of working is a challenging situation to experience. You need emotional support from your loved ones and dependable help from the government. By learning about SSDI and sending in your application, you become one step closer to receiving the benefits that you deserve.
